This month, SBM has been a major feature in both Business Chief Africa and Gigabit magazines.

In an exclusive interview, Head of IT Application Ashwin Ramphul outlines how the organisation has leveraged the latest technology to synergise its global operations.

“We’re looking at RPA, AI and data analytics, and at some point we’re also investigating the use of Blockchain technology – our intention is very strong on these fronts,” outlines Ramphul in relation to the company’s ongoing technology journey.

For example, SBM has adopted Infosys RPA (robotics process automation) to process inward remittances – this has reduced processing time from over 15 minutes to just 2-3 minutes as well as reducing mistakes. “The advantage with robots is that they operate on a 24/7 basis,” says Ramphul.

This use of technology to add value to services and improve the customer experience will prove vital as SBM expands across the globe. The company currently has operations spanning Kenya, India and soon the Seychelles, so customers will increasingly demand and expect to be able to bank digitally and at their convenience.

“We’re present in countries where innovations and digital solutions have really hit the roof. India is like a honeypot where digital solutions are concentrated and Kenya has the gh9ghest digital penetration point in the whole of Africa,” Ramphul explains.
