Key to this growth and success has been placing procurement at the forefront of the business to improve the bottom line and boost productivity. “Decades ago, procurement wasn’t even seen as an important function,” says Dr. Ulrich Piepel, CPO at innogy.
“In the past, people only looked at the cost involved… but the most important thing is to establish RoI as a key factor to ensure we’re saving a multiple of what we’re spending. This is long term added value.”
Over the years, Piepel has developed the procurement department at innogy as an important strategic function, working with partners across countries and product groups to implement digital transformation and make procurement as efficient as possible.
The key ingredient to success? It’s all about the right people. “It’s about brains and, very importantly, passion. We then try to give highly skilled people freedom and trust. You have to reward staff, recognise who is doing a great job and encourage them to be braver.”
